2008: Final – Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings
The final of the inaugural edition of the IPL was played between the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals. The tournament came to a rocking end after the Rajasthan Royals defeated the Chennai Super Kings. Yusuf Pathan was the star of the show. He scored a match-winning fifty in the final. New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon Mcculum scored 158 of 73 in the first match of the 2008 season and Twenty20 cricket got off to a rocking start in India. The IPL champions list got its first entry.
2009: Deccan Chargers vs Royal Challengers
The second season of the IPL was hosted in South Africa (because of General Elections in India). The tournament was won by the Deccan Chargers after they defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Anil Kumble took five wickets for five runs in the second match of the tournament. Rohit Sharma (batting) and RP Singh (bowling) were the stars for the Deccan Chargers as they won their first trophy. Veteran Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist captained the Deccan Chargers and made them IPL winners.
2010: Final – Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians
Led by MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings were the IPL winners by defeating arch-rivals Mumbai Indians. It was an evenly-contested final, but an injury to Mumbai skipper Sachin Tendulkar ended up hampering Mumbai’s chances in the final. Consequently, The Mumbai Indians lost the final. Sachin Tendulkar was the highest run-scorer of the tournament and scored 618 runs in the tournament. For the first time ever, no member of the winning team could win either the purple cap or the orange cap. Chennai Super Kings made an entry into the IPL Champions list.
2011: Final – Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings ended up winning a second IPL title in a row. Their title defense was led by Mike Hussey and Suresh Raina in the batting department. Dwayne Bravo from the West Indies stuck at crucial intervals to pick up wickets at various stages during the tournament. Chennai became the first team to win 2 IPL titles in a row.
2012: Final- Kolkata Knight Riders vs Chennai Super Kings
Chennai made an entry into the IPL final for the third time in a row, but the team from Kolkata was in no mood to let the opportunity go begging this time around. Gautam Gambhir was brought into the side in 2011 to bolster KKR’s batting line-up, and his arrival reaped immediate dividends. KKR went on to win their first IPL title after three unsuccessful attempts. Kolkata Knight Riders made an entry into the IPL champions list.
2013: Final – Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings
Mumbai Indians finally managed to win an IPL title after defeating arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings. The match was an action-packed contest. Mike Hussey and Dwayne Bravo were both in top form, but the men from Mumbai went on to win the title. Interestingly, this was Sachin Tendulkar’s last season with the Mumbai Indians (as a player). Finally, the Mumbai Indians made an entry into the IPL champions list.
2014: Final- Kolkata Knight Riders vs Kings XI Punjab
Kolkata Knight Riders chased down a score of about 200 because of Manish Pandey’s batting performance. Wriddiman Saha of the KingsXI Punjab went on to score a century in the final but in vain. Kolkata chased down the total as the winning runs were hit by Piyush Chawla. KKR won their second IPL trophy in 3 years.
2015: Final – Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings
Mumbai Indians went on to win the IPL for the second time in three years. The final was contested between two of the tournament’s strongest teams, but the men in yellow could not succeed in winning the title.
2016: Final – Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Royal Challengers Bangalore
Sunrisers won their first title riding on David Warner’s rich batting form. Sunrisers Hyderabad had been one of the consistent performers in the tournament (over the years) and finally ended up winning a trophy. David Warner was the leading run-scorer for SRH while Bhuvaneshwar Kumar of SRH ended up picking the most wickets. IPL champions list got a new entry.
2017: Final – Rising Pune Supergiants vs Mumbai Indians
The Rising Pune Supergiants, led by MS Dhoni, failed to beat the Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians won their third IPL title in the process and became the most successful team in the history of the IPL. Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell McClenaghan combined to pick 39 wickets during the tournament. MI has been one of the most consistent IPL winners till now.
2018: Final – Chennai vs Hyderabad
Shane Watson scored a match-winning hundred to guide CSK to their 3rd title. The Sunrisers from Hyderabad was the tournament’s most consistent team but ended up falling short in the final. Kane Williamson was given the orange cap for scoring more than 700 runs in the tournament while Andrew Tye of KXIP bagged the most wickets.
2019: Final – Chennai vs Mumbai
Mumbai is the only 4-time IPL winner till now. The IPL champions list got its latest entry as Mumbai won its 4th title.
