An Overview

1975 Prudential Cup in England

The 1st edition of the cricket world cup was held in England and was contested by eight (8) teams.  The West Indies were the favourites to win the title even before the commencement of the tournament. West Indies defeated Australia in the final to claim the first-ever cricket world cup title. Clive Lloyd and Sir Viv Richards were in top form during the tournament.

1979 Prudential Cup in England

The second edition of the cricket world cup was again held in England. Much like 1975, the West Indies won the tournament for the second time in a row. This time around, they were up against England in the final and ended up defeating them with ease. The West Indian fast bowlers were in good form and took wickets at regular intervals throughout the tournament. Consequently, West Indies ended up as cricket world cup winners in 1979.

1983 Prudential Cup in England

India sparked a major upset in the final of the 1983 Prudential Cup to bring home their first ICC Cricket World Cup title. Kapil Dev, Madan Lal, Roger Binny and Mohinder Amarnath bowled brilliantly to dismiss the West Indies for 140 (while chasing 183) in the final. The tournament was known for India’s remarkable victory as the Asian team went on to become cricket world cup winners for the first time.

1987 World Cup

The 1987 edition of the Cricket World Cup was held in Asia (and not in the UK). India and Pakistan both qualified for the Semi-Finals but neither team could make it to the final. The final of the tournament was played between arch-rivals Australia and England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Needing 254 to win in 50 overs, England fell short by 7 runs.

1996 World Cup

The world cup returned to Asia for the second time and India reached the semi-final of the tournament, only to be defeated by the Sri Lankans. Sachin Tendulkar was in top form and scored big, but the Lankans ended up winning the tournament after defeating Australia in the final. This time around as well, the world saw a first-time cricket world cup winner.

1999 World Cup

Cricket World Cup returned to the UK for the first time after 1983 and saw Saurav Ganguly going after the Lankans with a  belligerent 183. Eventually, the tournament was won by the Aussies, who defeated Pakistan in the final to claim their second world cup title. Australia became cricket world cup winners for the second time.

2003 World Cup

India reached the final of the tournament for the first time since 1983 and was made to face the Aussies. Sachin Tendulkar was in good form throughout the tournament and ended the world cup with 673 runs as India fell short by 125 runs in the final.

2007 World Cup

Sri Lanka and Australia played the final this time around in the West Indies. The match was revised to 38 overs because of rain and the Aussies defeated the Lankans to win their third consecutive cricket world cup winners title.

2011 World Cup

India won the world cup after 28 years to end their wait for a world cup title. Yuvraj Singh was the star of the tournament for his all-round effort. Sri Lanka lost their second consecutive final to hand India the cricket world cup winners title.
